Moissanite vs. diamond

Practical guidance for choosing, wearing and keeping jewelry.

Separate the stone, metal and finish.

Stone type, base metal, coating, setting and workmanship answer different questions. A gold-colored surface does not mean solid gold, and “birthstone” can refer to a month-inspired color as well as a specific gemstone. Read the exact product specification before comparing price.

A practical comparison checklist.

What to compareQuestions to ask
Stone identityIs it natural, laboratory-grown or a simulant? Is a treatment or coating disclosed? Does a report, if provided, identify this specific stone?
MetalWhat is the base metal and declared fineness? Is the surface plated, filled or solid?
Setting and scaleWhat are the dimensions and weight? How is the stone secured, and is the profile suitable for the wearer’s routine?
Color and finishHow might the finish wear? Do photos show the actual variant and what does the listing say about color variation?
AftercareCan the design be resized or repaired? What cleaning and storage instructions apply to the whole piece?
Total costCompare the same size, finish and specifications, including customization, delivery and taxes.

Moissanite and diamond are different materials.

Moissanite is silicon carbide; diamond is carbon. Laboratory-grown diamond is diamond produced in a laboratory, whereas moissanite is a distinct material. Their appearance and optical behavior differ, so choose by what you enjoy and by accurate disclosure rather than by treating the names as interchangeable.

A stone’s identity alone does not establish the quality of a finished item. Review its setting, dimensions, metal and the seller’s evidence for the specific listing. For personal guidance, ask about the product.

Choose a finish you can maintain.

Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver; a surface finish may be applied over it or over another base metal. Plated surfaces can wear with use, and polishing methods suitable for bare silver may be unsuitable for a plated piece. Follow the actual product specification and care instructions.
